We received HUNDREDS of shelf cloud submissions! It was hard to select for a slideshow to accompany this story! We appreciate our readers!
It looks like the scene of an action or scary movie, but it's not!
What you see is a shelf cloud that hung over Montgomery County this weekend. According to the National Weather Service, a shelf cloud is “A low, horizontal, sometimes wedge-shaped cloud associated with the leading edge of a thunderstorm’s outflow or gust front and potentially strong winds. Although often appearing ominous, shelf clouds normally do not produce tornadoes.” Greg Beam, Emergency Management Director, said a transformer was struck by lightning on Rogers Mill during the time of the shelf cloud appearance.
There were no additional issues.
Another shelf cloud photo appears in this week's Advocate!
